Thoughts for Cinephiles

I’m a film student at Wilfrid Laurier University with a second major in Women’s Studies. In January 2012 I started an excel file where I began keeping track of all the films I had ever seen. Around May that list was at 880 and I made it my goal for that summer to get the list to 1000. As of today (July 15, 2015) It is at 1820 and growing exponentially.

My taste in movies is best described as alternative contemporary. I generally prefer English language films (although not exclusively) and films released after the end of the Hollywood Production Code. For some context about the development of my taste in film, when I first made a top 5 list, it was as follows

  1. A Few Good Men
  2. The Shawshank Redemption
  3. The Sting
  4. Forest Gump
  5. Amadeus

The next major shake up in the list came around the time the big list started and my top 5 looked like this

  1. Jaws
  2. Apocalypse Now
  3. Sideways
  4. Blade Runner
  5. Lost In Translation

This list hasn’t been totally shaken yet, but as I’ve watched more films, the more wrinkles get thrown into what I see as a great film, and what I see as a favourite film. Now the list cannot be contained to 5 and is as such

  1. Sideways
  2. The Departed
  3. Before Sunset
  4. Le Bonheur
  5. The Social Network
  6. Eyes Wide Shut
  7. Lone Star
  8. Lethal Weapon
  9. Casablanca
  10. Broadcast News

My favourite directors have definitely solidified recently. David Fincher, Sofia Coppola, Richard Linklater, Agnes Varda, and Paul Verhoeven take the top spots although the 70s is my favourite decade for film. Obviously there are some discrepincies between those different lists but as you’ll find when reading my stuff, ambiguity is a quality I like in film and film criticism. My posting is pretty inconsistent and I apologize about that, being a lazy university students doesn’t always allow for committed writing. But if you are looking for more of my writing you can find some of it here where I write for Sound on Sight. For shorter reviews (that I will do my best to post on here frequently you can follow my watching habits on Letterboxd.

Always feel free to comment and send me your own writing. While I don’t read fiction much anymore I more than make up for that with reading about film. Tweet at me @myntmarsellus
